The Cotton Picker from Robstown

As a preeminent pioneer of Mexican-American studies and a Texas State Hero, Dr. Arnoldo De León transformed his journey from the cotton fields of Robstown into a monumental academic legacy that redefined our understanding of Tejano history. I somehow manifested this fortunate meeting with a scholar whose name now graces the halls of history, and his mentorship offers a powerful mandate to continue writing the stories that restore our "bygone" way of life.

Writing the First Few “Notes” of La Canción de La Frontera

Set against the backdrop of 1940s La Grulla, Texas, La Canción de La Frontera, is a tribute to family "cuentos" and the roots of creativity. The story follows a young, curious Tristan as he sneakily masters "El Gigante"—a formidable Hohner accordion that feels nearly too big for his hands, but never too big for his dreams.

Inspired by the childhood of the author’s father, this fifth installment in the heritage series captures the exact moment traditional South Texas sounds began to pulse with a new musical energy. It is a lighthearted yet poignant exploration of how a single note, struck with enough determination, can turn a "foreign" instrument into a lifelong legacy of expression.

A South Texas, St. Patrick’s Celebration

The Batallón de San Patricio is a little known story of Mexican-American history, marking the merger of Irish and German immigrants with the Mexican people during the Mexican-American War. This cultural exchange—from German Metzgerei (butcher) techniques and the button accordion to Irish horsemanship—created unique mix of the South Texas borderlands. Today, this legacy continues in the sound of Tejano music, transforming St. Patrick’s Day into a celebration of the Harp, the Accordion, and the Eagle.
