DIY "Cucuy-Catchers"
From "Scary" Stories to Bedside Glow: A Brave Little Lantern for Your Little Readers
In the spirit of my book, Where El Cucuy Lurks, and celebrating the magic of our family traditions, I wanted to share a fun and simple craft you can do with your children this week: DIY "Cucuy-Catchers!"
Growing up, the legend of El Cucuy was always shared with a wink and a nod—a gentle reminder to listen to our elders and respect our family's wisdom. It was never about true fear, but about the lively, sometimes mischievous, folklore that makes our culture so vibrant. These "Cucuy-Catchers" are inspired by that very idea: transforming shadows and stories into something beautiful and bright that illuminates your home.
A Nod to Tradition It’s also a wonderful way to honor our heritage. Paper crafts, or papel artesanal, have always been a cornerstone of Mexican arts. From the intricate cut-outs of papel picado to the vibrant structures of piñatas, paper has been used for generations to tell stories and bring color to celebrations. This project is a simple, modern way to keep that "paper art" tradition alive in your own home while creating something that feels like a protective charm for your little ones.
Think of these colorful lanterns as little pieces of art that capture the imagination, turning ordinary light into a captivating display. They're a fantastic way to talk to your kids about the importance of listening and respect, while celebrating the traditions that make your family unique.
What You'll Need to Banish the Monsters:
Clean Glass Jars: Any size works! Old jelly jars, pickle jars, or even small Mason jars are perfect.
Colorful Tissue Paper: The more colors, the better!
Craft Glue or Mod Podge: Mod Podge works beautifully for this, but any white craft glue mixed with a tiny bit of water will do.
Foam Brush or Paintbrush: For applying the glue.
Child Safe Scissors (optional): For cutting larger tissue paper sheets, but tearing is encouraged!
Battery-Operated Tea Lights or Small LED Candles: (Safety first! Avoid real flames with paper crafts).
Let's Make Some Magic!
Prep Your Paper: Have your children tear the tissue paper into small, irregular pieces. There's no need for perfection here—the varied shapes add to the charm of your "stained glass" effect! This step is great for fine motor skills and creative freedom.
Glue It On: Using your foam brush, apply a thin layer of glue to a small section of your glass jar.
Stick & Layer: Gently press the torn tissue paper pieces onto the glued section. Overlap the pieces slightly, creating a mosaic of colors.
Repeat! Continue applying glue and layering tissue paper until the entire outside of the jar is covered. Don't worry if it looks a bit messy at this stage; it will dry clear and smooth.
Seal the Deal: Once the jar is fully covered, apply a final thin layer of glue (or Mod Podge) over the entire outside. This will seal everything in and give it a lovely, glossy finish when dry.
Dry Time: Let your "Cucuy-Catcher" dry completely. This might take a few hours, or even overnight, depending on how much glue you used.
Light It Up: Once dry, place a battery-operated tea light or small LED candle inside your finished lantern.
As you turn on your lantern and settle in to read Where El Cucuy Lurks together, remember that the brightest lights are the ones we kindle through our stories, our traditions, and the love we pass down from one generation to the next—may your home always be filled with that warm, protective glow.❤️
